Research

At JSW Law, we are committed to innovation and the creation of new knowledge based on research that connects the past, present, and future

Research Initiatives and Centers

Research programs are founded on the four pillars of JSW Law’s research initiative, to reflect Bhutan’s current legal needs: the interdisciplinarity of law with the tenets of GNH (environmental conservation, promotion of culture, sustainability, good governance, religion, and social sciences), international relations and politics, domestic and international business and commerce, and information, communication and technology. We are already leading the way in terms of the first pillar, that is, exploring the relationship between Bhutan’s unique multi-dimensional development philosophy of the Gross National Happiness and the law, sustainable development and law, environmental law, climate change law and policy. We are in the process of developing our capacity in terms of the other three pillars.

Library

Excellence in promoting conducive environment for research and learning

To engender scholarship, learning, and further the life of the mind, the first and only highly energy-efficient building in Bhutan, houses the JSW Law library. The library, therefore, has a three-fold mission. The first is to support the research needs of the JSW Law community with access to quality texts and other materials in a variety of subjects. The second is to provide an unparalleled legal collection on the law of Bhutan. The third, and possibly most valuable, is to provide access to materials in Dzongkha, the official language of Bhutan, so that students may further their own knowledge of this language.

A place to think beyond self and instill the sense of justice, service and wisdom

JSW Law is Bhutan's only law school established through the Royal Charter on 21st February 2015 by His Majesty the King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, as a gift to the people of Bhutan. In justice, service and wisdom, JSW Law strives to set the standards and lead the way in education, research, and good practices in the field of law and related fields. The law school opened its door to the historic first class of students (Class of 2022) on 3rd July 2017. Currently, we have five cohorts, totaling 108 (70 female and 38 male) undergraduate students.
