Professor Christina Binder shared her recent research on the exploration of “Liberty Versus Security? A Human Rights Perspective in Times of Terrorism“. Using human rights as a lens, Professor Binder examined whether there is an adequate balance between liberty and security with reference to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). In her analysis, Prof. Binder suggested that the European Court of Human Rights is increasingly demonstrating a willingness to evaluate not just the existence, but also the qualitative nature of domestic human rights protections in the face of national security threats.
