Lyonpo Sonam Tobgye, the first Chief Justice of Bhutan, addressed the students of JSW Law School this afternoon on the topic of constitutional governance and structures.
The former Chief Justice was chairman of the committee that drafted the 2008 Constitution of the Kingdom of Bhutan. He also presided on Bhutan’s Supreme Court from its inauguration in 2009 to his retirement in 2014. Prior to the creation of the Supreme Court, he served as Chief Justice of the High Court – at the time the highest judicial post in the nation – from 1991 to 2009.
Lyonpo has graciously agreed to speak to the students about Bhutan’s Constitution and the Constitution-drafting process in a series of informal lectures over the course of the law school’s first year.
