Chief Justice Tshering Wangchuk, Honourable Chairperson of the Governing Council of JSW School of Law receives SILF-MILAT South Asian Legal Education Excellence Award 2019, awarded by the Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF) in partnership with Menon Institute of Legal Advocacy Training (MILAT).
The special award was presented today at the International Symposium on “Prof. Madhava Menon’s Contribution to Law: Merging Modern and Contemporary Education with Traditional Values & Ethics” coinciding with the 11th Indian Law Teachers’ Day Celebration at the Rajiv Gandhi Convention Centre, Leela Raviz Hotel, Kerala, India.
The Award was presented in recognition of His Excellency’s selfless service and continued effort in promotion of JSW School of Law as a center of excellence in the country.
The JSW School of Law was founded in 2015, by the promulgation of a Royal Charter by His Majesty the King. The law school as envisioned by His Majesty is established to promote the rule of law with an objective to produce a well-trained and socially responsible legal fraternity in order to develop strong legal institutions contributing to a vibrant democracy, and to promote legal research and scholarship for the advancement of learning.
At the symposium, His Excellency stated that “Having been involved in the establishment of the law school from its inception, I currently serve as the Chairperson of the Governing Council, of the first and only law school in the Kingdom. In this capacity, I am asked to do precisely what Dr. Menon did – to draw upon my privileged position and notwithstanding my meagre international experience, provide the next generation of Bhutanese lawyers with an education that is truly world class and at the same time, truly Bhutanese in essence – grounded in our culture, tradition and values (honesty, respect, courage, responsibility and compassion) – to be the wind beneath their wings.”
Nearly 200 participants – Judges, Lawyers, Jurists, Law Teachers and Students from all over India and from SAARC Region along with Policy Makers participated in the Symposium and in the Award Ceremony.
The Society of Indian Law Firms and Menon Institute of Legal Advocacy Training organises an award ceremony every year to recognise the contributions in the field of legal education.
