Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law

The centrepiece of JSW Law’s experiential education programme are its law clinics, which students take during the fourth and fifth year of their studies. Working under the careful supervision of qualified clinical faculty-practitioners, students provide crucial real-world access to justice for clients and community partners who would otherwise not be able to afford such representation.

There are three law clinics at JSW Law: the Human Dignity Clinic (HDC) lead by Prof. Dema Lham, Appropriate Dispute Resolution Clinic (ADRC) lead by Prof. Kuenzang Dolma, the Social Enterprise Clinic (SEC) lead by Prof. Adrian Von Bernstorff. These three areas were identified as ones where JSW Law’s clinical faculty and students could make a tangible positive impact on the communities we serve. They also focus on crucial skills that students will need to practice as effective, ethical, and innovative professionals after graduating from JSW Law. Students are encouraged to choose a clinic based not only on their substantive interests, but also (and especially) on the kinds of lawyering skills they wish to develop prior to their graduation.

The class of 2022 began clinics starting yesterday. A small ceremony to mark the day was observed by offering prayers. … See MoreSee Less

Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law

On 21st February, to mark the 41st Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the King and the Law School’s Foundation Day, Her Royal Highness Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck, the Honourable President of the Law School, launched the inaugural volume of the _Journal of Gross National Happiness & Law.

The Journal is only the latest step in the law school’s core research and teaching mission to explore the nexus between Bhutan’s unique development paradigm, “Gross National Happiness,” and the law. This mission informs the law school’s curriculum, pedagogy, and virtually all aspects of faculty-driven research. It is central to JSW Law’s efforts to produce a generation of mindful lawyers in the service of Bhutan and humanity.

The Journal will be a periodical publication, devoted to the study of the complex interplay between Bhutan’s unique policy goal of “Gross National Happiness,” and the rule of law. It was conceived of by Her Royal Highness Ashi Sonam Dechan Wangchuck, who proposed in 2015 that the law school spearhead a global effort to investigate the relationship between GNH and the law as its primary, long-term research agenda inspired by Their Majesties, His Majesty the King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and His Majesty the Great Fourth Jigme Singye Wangchuck. Their Majesties have always prioritised the happiness of the people as an important policy goal. Justice, harmony, the welfare of the people and good government are consistently cited as an essential part of GNH principles.

Through the Journal, JSW Law will continue to discuss GNH-based approaches to the concepts such as the rule of law, justice, and good governance. It will also form an integral part of the learning resources for our students, in our efforts to create a generation of mindful and responsible future leaders. … See MoreSee Less
